SUMMARY:ROH Live: Die Walküre
DESCRIPTION:Antonio Pappano conducts an international cast in the second part of Richard Wagner’s epic Der Ring Des Nibelungen. \nKeith Warner’s production is conducted by Antonio Pappano\, Music Director of The Royal Opera\, and this final revival is cast with an outstanding international array of Wagnerian specialist singers. The full cycle’s four music dramas journey from the beginning of a world to its destruction\, with gods\, heroes and monsters. This epic myth portrays every type of human emotion in music and ideas of extraordinary power. The Ring is always a special event in the operatic calendar: once experienced\, never forgotten. \nDie Walküre (The Valkyrie) is the second work in the cycle\, and features several of the Ring’s musical highlights – the sparkling Magic Fire Music and the electrifying Ride of the Valkyries. But among the musical fireworks and Norse mythology\, at the centre of this opera are the unforgettable characters and the complex entanglements between them\, including twins Siegmund and Sieglinde\, and Wotan and his Valkyrie daughter\, Brünnhilde. \nApproximate running time: 4 hours 50 minutes\, including two intervals. Sung in German with English subtitles.

DESCRIPTION:‘And then they found me guilty\, and then they pronounced me invisible\, for a span of one year’\nRobert Silverberg\, To See the Invisible Man \n\n\nCondemned for a ‘crime of coldness’ by an authoritarian regime\, The Invisible is cast adrift from society. Yet\, as the lonely exile draws to a close\, it is not coldness but perilous empathy with a fellow Invisible that risks the cycle of exclusion beginning all over again… \nEmily Howard’s new opera\, based on a short story by renowned American sci-fi writer Robert Silverberg\, is a claustrophobic study of isolation; a dark satire on social conventions; and a stark reminder of our cruelty to outsiders. First performed in 2011 to great critical acclaim\, this double bill shows Puccini at his finest as a master of the theatre that speaks to the heart. \nSung in Italian with English surtitles

SUMMARY:Shackleton's Cat\, English Touring Opera
DESCRIPTION:Shackleton’s Cat returns in 2018\, as part of ETO’s award-winning strand of operas for young people. The opera features nine performers\, including singers and players\, and tells the story of the voyage and destruction of the Endurance 100 years ago\, and the subsequent tale of survival against all odds. \nThe story itself begins in 2015\, when scientists measuring the alarming changes in the levels of the polar sea-ice make an astonishing discovery: the bones of a cat. They belong to Mrs Chippy\, the carpenter’s cat on the Endurance\, and best friend to the young Welsh stowaway Perce Blackborow. At the heart of the opera is Shackleton himself\, perhaps the greatest expedition leader of all time. The opera follows the crew as they set sail from Buenos Aires to the incredible rescue after months of hardship. \nWith an ingenious set made of maps and images from the expedition to the Antarctic\, interactive songs and a puppet cat\, this opera\, aimed at children aged 7–11\, is performed by ETO’s singers and orchestra\, and was created by composer Russell Hepplewhite and librettist Tim Yealland.

SUMMARY:MET Opera: Massenet's Cendrillon
DESCRIPTION:A fairy godmother\, a glass slipper\, an opulent ball\, an enchanted forest\, and a Prince Charming who loves her – did all that really happen\, or was it just a dream? For the first time ever\, Massenet’s sumptuous version of the Cinderella story comes to the Met in this imaginative storybook production directed by Laurent Pelly. Superstar Joyce DiDonato sings the title role\, alongside British mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of Prince Charming\, Kathleen Kim as the Fairy Godmother\, and Stephanie Blythe as the archetypal wicked stepmother. \nOther cinemas may also be screening this. Find your nearest cinema screening through the excellent Operaworld search tool!
